Frequently Asked Questions...
How do I make a choppy skirt?
I want to be an elf for Halloween - not a Santa elf, but a wood elf or wood nymph or whatever you want to call it. I already have a vest and I know how I'm going to make the arm bracers and other accessories, but I can't find a skirt or dress like what I want in any nearby stores. My mom said she could help me make it, but I need to find a sewing pattern. I'm not sure if I want short or long sleeves, but I'm leaning toward short. Please help. Thanks.
This is kind of what I want my costume to look like: http://www.stylehive.com/bookmark/etsy-loriann37-wood-elf-fairy-fantasy-waist-cincher-costume-custom-made-to-any-size-xs-plus-size-440123
PS The reason I'm not buying a costume like this is because they're all way too expensive.
Answer:
That skirt is a couple of big pieces of square fabric, one brown and one green, turned 45 degrees to each other. The waistline is a big circle cut out of the center of both pieces of fabric, then gathered to a waistband.
Sort of like this: http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com/2008/08/31/handkerchief-skirt/
If I were doing this the quick and dirty route, I'd look for a couple of cheap pieces of knit fabric (because most knits won't ravel if they aren't hemmed).
