LONG TERM CONTRIBUTION OF PVC IN HEALTH CARE:

PVC compounds have been progressively used in healthcare for almost 50 years and have been, therefore, the subject of a vast amount of research. PVC is used primarily in medical disposables as it is considered unsuitable for long-term implant applications. Considerable progress has been made in raw material selection, purification, processing, fabrication and sterilization to minimize any risk to patient safety. In the case of DEHP plasticizer, which is the work horse for today's flexible PVC Compounds for medical in blood contact applications, there are well over 3,500 published papers relating to its toxicology (safe use).

CHALLENGES BY ENVIRONMENTALIST TO PVC:

It is a certain fact that PVC is under sustained attack from environmentalist and other rival material suppliers. Despite a series of challenges on health and environmental grounds PVC remains the dominant polymer in the medical device application. This debate has spawned new generation of materials that promises to augment, if not replace, PVC in variety of application. However, the market for PVC continues to grow in line with GDP around the globe. One factor behind the demand for PVC is the concern over transmittable deceases which have lead to a substantial increase in the use of presterilised disposable medical products. Medical tubing is another area where PVC dominates.

KEY BARRIERS TO PVC REPLACEMENT:

It is a common view amongst the world's leading medical device companies that there is a place for PVC until alternative materials become readily available on a comparable cost performance basis.

PVC compound is still a competitive biomaterial for disposable medical devices and retains many key attributes to support its defense against the advance of non-PVC polymer biomaterial technologies.

The likelihood of an outright ban on the use of PVC in medical & health care is thought, therefore to be premature on the basis of undoubted success during the last 50 years (i.e. based on existing performance data of PVC in the disposable, medical device arena) that PVC compound has demonstrated its great ability to satisfy the demanding requirements of the medical healthcare industry.

ABC OF INNOVATION:

The family of Hi-performance PVC compounds are created by orderly scientific and innovative technical development by the virtue of ABC… Alloying, Blending and reactive Compounding.

Flexible PVC compound is currently used in non-critical applications and non-severe environment because of its certain inherent limitations like its typical behavior of a very slightly crystalline thermoplastic and also problems with plasticizer permanence, extraction, migration, exudation and embrittlement on ageing. Flexible PVC compound products are subjected to demanding service conditions which limit their long term usefulness. In addition certain processing limitations and physical property shortcomings are also associated with conventional Flexible PVC.

We have developed Hi-performance PVC compounds and super flexible compounds that would minimize problems with plasticizer permanence, staining, exudation, migration and embrittlement and also the creep property due to the typical behavior of slightly crystalline PVC.

Generally PVC is compounded with additives like plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers, colorants, lubricants, processing aids and UV absorbers. A compounding technician has the ability to compound PVC; he can vary the property widely and certainly overcome some of the described problems associated with PVC. The conventional compounder is unable to achieve the combination of all properties described by the conventional compounding technology.


FEATURES OF HI-PERFORMANCE PVC COMPOUNDS:

  • Free from odour & taste
    to resist discoloration & degradation during processing
  • Excellent flow properties for easy moulding
  • Excellent melt strength and low die swell for extrusion grades to give excellent dimension controls for thin wall tubes and high speed extrusion

Retention of plasticizer essential to maintain the flexible integrity of PVC through out its service life and also are serviceable in service environment where high temperature or extractive fluids. The loss of plasticizer causing embrittlement is the most common mode of failure under this condition
